Thursday, April 3rd...2 1/2 weeks left until Tanner leaves for Argentina
Today,
I was headed down to Orem & had picked up 2 Firehouse footlong Subs
(Tanner's favorite!) and took them to the Jamba Juice near Raintree
Apartments (that the Elders stay in) and dropped them off with a gift
card to buy a couple smoothies. I wasn't SURE that the Jamba Juice I
went to was the correct location. I asked at the store & she said
that "Yes, this is where the Elders come too." So I wasn't sure &
couldn't make up my mind if I could & wanted to see Tanner or not. I
had to drive around a little to figure out where Raintree apts. were,
but found them. As I drove around for a few minutes,
I luckily DIDN'T see him, thank goodness! Came home & emailed him a little bit- I'll add a little below here.
Here is a little of Tanner's & my emails back n forth. Talking about the 2 sandwiches I got, but there were 3 of them that are in the companionship...oops!!! Then talking about Dad & his gall bladder surgery.
EG: Its totally fine! we still appreciated it! Yeah i did! No kidding! Sound like it is something in the water! Thats good! I'll make sure to keep him in my prayers! hahaha yeah thats never been a problem for him! alright good! i'll try sending him one right now! do you think that post mart will get here today or tomorrow? thanks! love you! Tell the girls to email me too! I wanna hear from them! and anybody else like Shelley! i still havent heard from him! and Anthony! and also colton and demory and aubri and dayton! Todd and Rachel! i love the emails and letters!
Me: Oh, I forgot, Where is Levi Lopez going? Bay & Madi always played with his little sisters at the soccer games or practices. I believe they were LDS, but maybe I'm wrong. That is SO cool to see him!
I DO hope you can escort Brad! That would be SO COOL! Do you know Who to ask, or what to do to be his? I just hope there will be times that you can be up on the Main campus to see him.
EG: Mexico City! I only had a quick second to talk to him since i had to get
to class but i see him around all the time now! I hope so too but i
have no idea who i would talk to especially since i'm on the opposite
campus of him but i will for sure find him at the devotionals every
tuesday and sunday nights! From left to right it is Elder Reynolds who
is one of my companions, then Elder Trotter who i have come to be really
close with, then Elder Cragun who is like my best friend here and one of
my companions! and then Elder Sanders. (this is regarding the picture above of his district at the Provo Temple)
EG: alright! did you happen to put more pictures and stuff in the package as
well? I never have any time to read those talks you always send me!
sorry! but i literally only have time on P days and thats one of the
last things i want to sit and do on those days! Yeah i heard about that!
nope, we dont need any stamps! we have got thousands between all our

Nope I'm the only one going to BAS! Yeah I had to resend them just today

That's really tough to hear about Dad! hopefully all works out and he
can get better soon! But yeah i know Dad and whether or not he is
feeling it he will be back out working and everything ASAP! I haven't
seen anybody going to the Bahia Blanca mission so far but i will try to
find out! I am in a companionship of 3! sorry i thought i had told you
that! I'm so excited to see Brad though! I want to find out if there is
any way I could go up to Main Campus and be his host for the day! That
would be the coolest thing ever! Everything happens for a reason i guess
though! Hopefully you guys have fun over Spring break! Things are going
good! Anxious to get out to Argentina but the weeks are flying by! I
can teach a whole lesson in spanish really easily and my companions
always end up turning to me and asking what the investigator said or how
to say a word so i am doing awesome i feel like! Definitely have been
gifted with the gift of tongues! The weeks here at the MTC are pretty
consistent! Not much changes from week to week! but this sunday we had a
really cool devotional of a certain mormon singer that just returned
off his mission! David Archuleta came and gave a small talk to us on
sunday night and then sang a bunch of hymns for us! He seems like a
really cool guy and most of the people at the MTC got to shake his hand
and talk to him for a second! And then the same devotional the Organist
for the MoTab came and talked to us and he was a really cool guy!
Absolutely amazing the talent that the organist, Richard Elliot had! It
was such a cool and amazing spiritual experience to hear from people
like these two who were well known and were spreading the gospel through
their music talents! So this week has been an awesome one! Me and one
of my companions Elder Cragun were asked to give a blessing to a Hermana
missionary who broke her foot here at the MTC a few days before and it
was really started to flare up and feel the pain! So we gave the
blessing and now it sounds like she is doing pretty good! So that was
fun! So guess who i saw here at the MTC yesterday? There was a bunch of
new missionaries that came in and as we were headed to class we noticed
them and they didn't have enough hosts to show them where their
apartments and classes were so we all started helping them out. And then
i heard my name Gillett called out from behind me and I turned around
and it was Levi Lopez from the Rangers who i planned with a long time
ago! I never thought he was LDS so it was cool to hear from him and
think that another missionary probably worked on his family so that i
could see him here and its cool to think i´ll have the opportunity to do
that for other people families! But I also have really enjoyed being at
the MTC sometimes it can be really hard but overall i know i am
supposed to be here and whenever i start to doubt it at all i am swept
over with the feeling of comfort that i am doing what i need to do!
Super Bien! But this last week i got interviewed by the Branch President
because everybody does the 1st 3rd and 6th week of your time at the MTC
and we have come to be really close! He even told me that if i hadn´t
been planning on leaving the 2nd week in and hadn´t already called other
missionaries to be the Zone Leaders that i would have been his first
choice! Its nice to notice that people really do actually notice the
effort that you put in! So yeah anyways love you all! Hope everything is
going good! Can´t wait to see Brad this week too!

For General Conference the family watch the Saturday AM session at home & then while Mike was taking it easy, he got himself a R/C Car to work on. So I asked the girls if they'd like to go down to Conference - Bailey ended up wanting to go with me, so we got ready & headed down. We arrived about 1:30, & stood on the grounds of the Conference Center & held up my 2 fingers for tickets. We did get 2 & headed in, sat down just in time for the opening prayer. It was a really good session, we sat clear up top at the balcony level, which kind of makes you a little sick. After we headed out & took pictures from the Conference Center, Temple Square & then we went up to the JS Roof Top & took a few pictures.
It was a BEAUTIFUL day!
On
Saturday, they announced that there are 83,000 plus Missionaries as of
December 31st, 2013, however media departments were asking for more
updated numbers...(which I'd like because now Tanner is in those
numbers!) So Sunday, they released NEW Updated totals, and that number
is 85,000 Missionaries now serving!
Sunday
night after GC and dinner we had FHE & Madi was in
charge..."Don't use Bad Language!" She did a great job and we even had a
visitor for dinner & FHE...Colton!
Spring
Break we ended up staying home this year again. We had a nice relaxing
GC weekend, and Monday we went to Gardner's Village & fed the
ducks & fish. Then headed over to the new Dunkin' Donuts store
in Draper & ended up at McDonald's playland in Lehi for Morgan,
before heading home & sitting in the sun for a few minutes.
As
of tomorrow these 4 will FINALLY ALL be out doing what they've wanted
to do for oh, so long. *GOOD LUCK* Elder Clark D&C 133:8 "Send

Today
we stopped off at Krispy Kreme Donuts & picked up 2 boxes for
Tanner & his District, then went to University Mall &
played with Rachel & Mo, then picked up some shoes for Prom for
Bailey. Then did a little more shopping/looking before we stopped off at
Coldstone for a ice cream cup. Dropped off the donuts at a MTC mail
drop store, then to Target, picked up Madi some sandals & headed
home.
P-day Thursday, April 9th 2014: (email back n' forth)
I'm on! I can't wait to try and find Brad! The days couldn't come soon
enough! (re: going to ARG) I didn't really have a favorite this time! (April General Conference) The whole first
session was really good but the rest just kinda repeated so I wasn't
super impressed with those final sessions! We did get the doughnuts!
Thanks! The other Elders in my district are mad we are gonna be fat from
all the food you send! ;) haha so we have started door bell ditching it
to the new missionaries we got this week! Love you! I really don't need
any food or anything from jamba juice or anywhere else! but thanks!

Weekly email- 4.9.14
I love getting packages and mail! Seriously it makes the weeks go by so
fast! Yes! We need some more music! Hahaha yeah it could be! (re: Gen.
Conf) I really enjoyed it a ton honestly but I really got the most by
far out of the first session! I thought that he was probably somehow
related to Todd because of the last name Zwick! It was really nice to
be able to sleep in until 8:30ish on sunday and saturday because of
conference though! :) haha that was a blessing for me! But we have
learned a ton this week about letting the spirit teach! It was
especially an amazing feeling when we were talking to one of our
investigators who we found out smoked and drank but he was really really
addicted to smoking. After we had just talked about letting the spirit
teach and not us I really tried hard in that lesson with Adan to do all
the things they told me to do like to start the lesson with prayer
always, pray for your companion as they are speaking so they will say
the right thing and have the spirit with them, to not look for what
scripture or line in the preach my gospel we are going to respond with
to the investigator but to really just listen to what they are saying,
what the holy ghost is saying, and what your companion is saying. We
also learned that 90% of feelings from the holy ghost will come in the
form of a question you can ask your investigator. So after trying those
things during this lesson with Adan it was the coolest experience ever!
We had a member (another teacher) come in and help us explain the word
of wisdom to Adan and it went amazing! Right as we walked in we
introduced the member to Adan and Adan is a 23 year old with a 4 month
old baby and he is looking for a job or else his dad is kicking him out
of the house! so right as we walk in Adan said something about not
having a job and the member said Hey i have a job for you! Adan was
super pumped! It was super cool(even if he isn't a real investigator) to
see his progress and how amazing this gospel and church is! So now with
Adan having a job, we started to teach about the word of wisdom! We
taught him a little bit about not smoking and drinking before and he
didn't drink in 2 days since we taught him again so that was a win! But
we got in there and started to teach him about how to better overcome
smoking! And it was cool to apply what we learned in the lesson before
because as I go back and think about that lesson, I don't think I
personally moved my mouth once and said what I was thinking! Seriously,
anytime I had a feeling i needed to say something it came right out in
pretty good spanish and it was super cool! Even the teacher(member) who
came in with us was a little surprised at how well that went! It was an
amazing experience!
So yesterday we had the opportunity to be Host's for the
new missionaries here on West Campus which is one of the reasons I
wasn't able to host Brad! I was a little bummed but oh well! With only
having less than 2 weeks left It was really cool to introduce the new
missionaries to the MTC! It made me think back on my first day here and
how lucky they were because they weren't thrown in a classroom from the
get-go like we were! It also made me realize how much progress I have
made being here only a month. Super crazy thought! I have learned more
about the gospel and language here in 4 weeks than I ever could have in 3
months! I love being out on a mission! I honestly haven't had a hard
time with anything just because I have learned to enjoy the good and the
bad! Love you all! The Church is true! And if any of you are choosing
on a mission or not! I would say its been the most amzing thing to
experience ever... Absolutely Incredible!
I got my travel itinerary today! Head out on your birthday! Leave from
the MTC at about 6;30am then from SLC to Atlanta at 11:09am and land at
4:45. then after we go to Buenos Aires on a 13 hour flight at like 9PM
eastern time(I think) so about 7 pm here!
PS if you haven't heard of this thing called Dear Elder on the internet
you can type up a message to me on the computer and they will put a
letter in my mailbox and I will get an email of the letter too! You
should start doing that! Its free and super easy! Also I hear to some
missions you can send packages through Dear Elder for Free as well! Even
in south america i think but i haven't heard exactly what countries
yet!

Thursday, April 17th 2014 (Back n' forth emails) *Last P-day in MTC*
EG: Hey I'm online right now! I have a super cool story to share of an investigator that we taught this week in the MTC or CCM! His name is Gabriel Illanes! With an i as the first letter in his name and two LL's after haha that always bugged me about typing! I wrote it in my journal though and its too long to type so i will take pictures and send them to you so you can read the whole story!
EG: Yeah i got the alarm clock! Thanks a ton! :) It was so amazing to see Elder Bambi! haha he is doing good! As good as any new missionary can be doing his first week in the MTC! I'll tell you the story in the big email here in a second! Gotta go change laundry and get the picture of the journal!
Me: youve been getting a lot of "likes" on your ig acct when i put pictures up...MOSTLY from girls though, I wonder why?!?! maybe cuz thats all thats left here :0) did you remember that name of the sister you gave a blessing too? furner maybe? have you gotten to play soccer yet?
EG: hahaha probably is! Now get them to email me! :) haha yeah it was sister furner. Yeah I know Castellano will be hard but its pretty much the same and they taught a little bit of it here so I shouldn't be too bad off! No soccer yet so I am dying to school some little argentinian kids (or get schooled)! haha

EG: Yeah either way the language will be difficult at some point or another! :) yeah i have heard from everybody now except for the nunleys now! Tell them to get on it! haha :) but tell them i love them anyways i guess ;) i emailed bailey a little bit! Love you! like i said last week i think its around like 5 or so when i will end up calling you on monday! Happy birthday and Easter until then! Still have a little more time but not much on the computer!
EG: I don't think he is a real investigator. He is just one of the church members that knows spanish and volunteers but we are going to dinner tonight with him and everything! He is seriously one of the nicest guys ever! He tells us Argentina jokes and stuff all the time. Like this one, the people of Argentina are all a like arrogant and so since he is from chile he always told this joke to his friends because chile and argentina and rivals "which country is closest to heaven?" Chile is because its next to Argentina! haha or also "Why do the people of Argentina go outside when there is lightning?" Because they think God is taking pictures of them! Super funny! haha anyways love you!
EG: (I had asked him about getting any packages) i haven't got one from demory yet! i don't think i need anything else! hoping i have enough money to pay for my luggage and stuff and that its all underweight! So if you would just make sure as a back up i have some extra money in my back account if i need to pay for luggage but i should be fine cuz i have like $180 or 170! I have to pay $100 for one bag.. and then if it weighs over 50 pounds i have to pay more for it! :)
Elder Gillett & Elder Bambi (Clark) haha!
So this week was an amazing week to have! The first of the week was just super normal until I was able to go see Elder Bambi Clark! That was a super cool thing! Ha so on sundays we always have a devotional that everybody from main campus and west campus go to. But since our branch president makes us go to choir we always have to be up there an hour early! When we went up I knew that Bambi was going to be up there so I brought Elder Trotter with me and we started looking around for him before we had choir! We saw a couple of missionaries and noticed they had Russian name tags on so we went up to them and asked if they knew where an Elder Clark might be! They said they were in his district or zone or something and said he was in the lunch room eating where all the Russian goers are sitting. So Elder Trotter and I snuck in and and around the Salad bar and I was able to get all the way to him and tap him on the shoulder before he saw me so when he looked up it was super cool to see him! hahah kinda like one of those movies where they haven't seen each other in a long time and then they finally do and its super cool but this time wasn't as romantic... Haha just more of an Elderly Bromance going on if that makes sense! But seriously it was so awesome to be able to sit at the devotionals with him and "pay attention" to the speaker on sunday night! hahaha but tuesday night we had Neil L. Anderson come and talk to us about the power of the Book Of Mormon and all the different doctrines in it! It was really cool and special too because he made it more of an interactive talk where we all read scriptures together and would share our thoughts on everything together! And then this week we had an investigator we have had for awhile that we have become really good friends with while we have been here and hang out with when we don't have class. So to give a little background Gabriel is about 50 years old and is from Chile, lived in Buenos Aires for awhile and now lives in Utah. Now I would type the whole story out but I don't have even close to enough time so i will include some pictures at the end of this email that has the whole story written out! Super amazing experience though!
So yeah everyone is asking how ready I am to leave the MTC! and the
answer is I am more ready than you could ever know! Seriously I have
really enjoyed and learned so much while I have been here at the MTC but
there is only so much time you can handle here before you feel like you
need to just jump all the way into the language and learn with
application! I am so ready to go to Argentina! I have felt the amazing
feeling of loving your investigators and how tough it is going to be to
leave friends like Elder Cragun, Elder Trotter, Elder Reynolds and
Gabriel but I am so ready.
So this sunday is supposed to be super special though! With it
being Easter Sunday we are having an extra special guest come and talk
to us! And we have been treated with extra special ones like David
Archuleta, Richard Elliot, and Neil L Anderson! So it makes me think we
will probably be having Thomas S Monson or Jeffrey R Holland coming to
talk to us this Easter Sunday! So I'm sure I will have tons to talk to
you about on monday when I peace out from the MTC and go to Buenos
Aires! I met a tognan Hermana here at the MTC who is headed to Buenos
Aires South like 2 weeks after I am and then I found out that there is a
Hermana named Kaitlyn Wright who is down there also I think that went
to Lone Peak and played on the girls soccer team! And also I was a host
again for the new missionaries and one of the sisters said her
missionary is down in south buenos aires so she has a lot to talk to me
about what it will be like down there! as you can probably tell I can't
wait to say the least... Love you all! Hope life is going as good as

Gillett’s Journal Entry - April 14, 2014
So
WOW, today was seriously the coolest day of the mission ever. I have a now
found out tons of good about the mission & also how tough it is going to
be. We went in teaching Gabriel about Prayer. To explain Gabriel a little bit of
our first lesson with him, he got mad at us for not teaching the Restoration
right. Then for many lessons after that we taught some really good ones &
began to become really close friends with him & stuff. He is from Chile,
lived in Buenos Aires, Texas, & now in Utah & he is one of our
investigators we taught here at the MTC. We talked to him before this lesson
about a city where he used to live in Chile that caught on fire and he was very
sad about how it went down. So we decided to let him know that prayer is
amazing. We went in & shared Enos
1:1-12 & D&C 9:7-9. We told him if you will pray to God with a sincere
heart, there is nothing He can’t do for us. Then he told us a story about how
when he was 9 years old, 2 of his brothers disappeared & they had no idea
where too. So his mom was super worried, she told him to pray & listen
closely to see if God will help you because he wants to help us & will.
After he finished his prayer with praying real intent & a sincere heart,
God will always help you. Then after he had a feeling he needed to go to his
front door & as he opened the door his brothers walked in. Then after that,
he started another story about his son who is a basketball player. His sons
elbow & arm started hurting one day. And then his legs stopped working.
Gabriel took him to all sorts of doctors & none of them knew what was going
on with his son for 4 months. Until one day Gabriel decided to get down on his
knees & pray like he did when he was 9. He found an empty room @ work, got
on his knees & prayed asking God how he felt when Jesus was on the cross
& dying, He told Heavenly Father he understood now, that if his son were to
die he wouldn’t be angry with God. Just sad like God was when the rain came
down when Jesus died. When he finished the prayer, Gabriel said a thought came into
his mind that his son had cancer & they needed to go home right then to
take him to the hospital. So Gabriel did, he took his son there to the
emergency & they rushed Gabriel’s son to the ER & they said, “your son
has cancer, & possible won’t make it through the night.” And he is now playing basketball and
everything still. He is doing perfect! Not taking any kind of medicine or
anything anymore.
This
whole experience made me realize how tough it is going to be leaving the people
I am teaching. It is the most spiritual experience ever with Gabriel, Elder
Reynolds & Elder Cragun. I am super excited for it all but I felt the true
love of Christ after this. I felt the charity for all my investigators.

Monday, April 21st-
Back on April 10th Tanner sent us an email with some of his Travel information-
I got my travel itinerary today! Head out on your birthday! Leave from the MTC at about 6:30am then from SLC to Atlanta at 11:09am and land at 4:45. then after we go to Buenos Aires on a 13 hour flight at like 9PM eastern time(I think) so about 7 pm here! So thats when i will call you because we have a 5 hour layover there in the airport! Love you
Yesterday morning, after thinking about his email, I didn't think he really took into account the time difference between here (Utah) & Georgia. So I sent Mike a text telling him to be home maybe earlier than what we thought of 5 pm for Tanner's phone call.
After cleaning the house, & while I was getting ready I got this picture text from Andrew Vawdrey

ig post- SMALL World sometimes... Our friend, Shelby Walker, her brother sent this text & picture to her then onto us just minutes ago. Heading out of SLC to Georgia, then onto Argentina! THIS Totally MADE MY Birthday! I mean, I knew Tanner was going to try & call from Georgia, but to get this unexpected surprise, it was THE BEST!!!
So, I had waited around the house in the morning cleaning & doing laundry, while I knew he was at the SL airport, but when I got this text & picture, I knew I wouldn't be getting a call that morning (10:30 am or so). So I got ready for the day, headed out to do a few errands, then got home just in time for Bailey to walk in the door @ 1:30. At 2:30 we headed out to her laser appt, got there & they for some reason didn't have an appt for us, so we hurried home, JUST in case the phone rang.
Mike got home about 3:45 and by 4:10 Tanner tried to make his first phone card call. It wouldn't go through for some reason, so we waited & waited and finally maybe 10 minutes later he tried again...
He sounded SO GOOD!!! We had him on speaker phone, so all of us could talk to him. He told us how excited he was to be in GA, but it was SO HOT & humid, he said its tough being in a suit & tie, but knows he's got to get use to it. He's anxious to get to ARGENTINA! He told us the story about how he met Wade Walker, Shelby's brother. He started talking to Tanner, and asked where he was from, in which Tanner said Alpine. Wade said that's where he was from, told Tanner his name & connected Shelby right away! Tanner said that he's traveling with about 25 other Elders & Sister Missionaries headed that way, however he is the ONLY one going to BAS mission. Other missionaries will have to take another plane to their final destinations in ARG.
He told us that their surprise guest speaker at the MTC on Easter Sunday was Pres. Deiter F. Uchtdorf for their Sacrament service Sunday morning at 10 am and spoke on Missionary Work! They partook of the Sacrament as a WHOLE MTC, rather than the usual district, of 7 in their own district. Which was COOL! He told us of the different friends from LPHS that he has ran into over the weeks at the MTC- BRAD, Bree, Jessica Hammond, Tanner V., TJ Haws (He & his gf entered into the MTC on the same day) He saw Eric Mika & his gf at a street corner while walking one day (they both have their calls & going to the same mission). He told us of a box of stuff he sent home, his luggage is on weight for travel, told him about the Nunley's email I forwarded to him, he said he saw Brad on Sunday, so that was good to be able to say goodbye, etc. He has a 13 plus hour flight from GA, USA to Buenos Aires Argentina which he should arrive about 8 am or so this morning in BA, ARG time. He asked if I'd look up Gabriel Illanes from Provo, Utah on facebook & "friend" him for him later on, & keep in touch. He told us that Sister Furner, who he helped give a blessing to was doing much better & headed out last week for Mexico. He met a Sister Missionary that is headed to BAS mission in a few weeks, from Tonga, I think he said. He said he didn't end up having a final meeting with his Branch President because it was so busy that Easter Sunday, so they just let them leave without one.
We spoke for just over an hour, but when I first began talking to him, he sounded so good & was so excited to talk to him I began to cry. He knew it, of course, & of course Mike & the girls made fun of me. But when Bailey started to tell him about Prom, the SAME thing happened to her & she got really emotional, so we gave the phone to Madi for a few minutes. Bailey eventually told her Prom story, hike, pick up, dance, etc. It was really good to talk to him, every time it got silent for a minute, I'd start talking again...I think it was so I just didn't want to have to say goodbye, so I'd just start talking. He said he already said goodbye to Elder Cragun, who was headed to Canada that morning at 2 am, but everyone else they would say goodbye at the BA Argentina airport.
I offered to get anyone's phone number if he wanted to call someone else. Now with cell phones its all automated & you forget numbers. So hopefully he was able to call someone if he wanted too- although I think we took up a lot of his time...which I'm okay with :0)

we should get an email and/or picture of Tanner when he gets to his
mission home with his Mission President etc. just so we know he's made
it there safely. (That's what usually happens, so we'll see-)

My Birthday
On Wednesday morning we received an email that Elder Gillett has arrived safely in
Buenos Aires, Argentina. Here he is with his

Mission President & Sister Thurgood and his trainer Elder
Santos.
His first area where he will be serving with Elder Santos is called, Berazategui. It is a town in the
Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Its elevation is 72 ft above sea level.
Its in between the cities of Buenos Aires & La Plata.

got a call from Post Mart in Orem, saying they have a box from Elder
Gillett that he left behind. In this box was his Temple bag (that
Missionary don't use while serving), some athletic shoes, a Buenos Aires
ARG t-shirt, some extra Missionary materials, books, etc. and THIS
Missionary Tag! I LOVE it!!! <3>
